Drum Making A Sacred Act

Traveling the Sacred Circle through dance and drum has a rhythm which is synchronized with the heart beat of a mother, both human and the earth. As we dance we are in rhythm with the beat of the music and our hearts. When we drum we are replicating the heartbeat of the earth.

As a drum maker, I believe the creation of a drum is a sacred act. When making a drum we connect to the creative part of ourselves. And, for me the creative act is connected directly to the Creator. In a drum making workshop, I begin with a meditation that consciously connects you to the Creator. You feel the sacred energy coursing through your body connecting you to the earth. You become the connection between heaven and earth. You feel the Creator energy flowing through your hands as you lace the rawhide to the wooden drum hoop.

In most Native belief systems there is a belief that all creation has life and that each life force is connect to all other life. For example, the rocks, the trees, the water, and even the air we breath are alive. Some people call this life force Chi, Prana, or Sacred Consciousness. It is this belief of all life is interconnected that we bring into the creation of your drum. As you lace your drum, you become consciously connect to the life force of your drum and to all Life.

Drum Making – Four Element Lacing

There are many ways to lace a drum. Here Neshi shows the ‘four element’ lacing that connects the drum to the Sacred Wheel and the four directions.
